Want to start therapy but not sure what it’s like? It can be a little daunting to start therapy for the first time. Sometimes it feels like you’re spilling your guts to a stranger…! If you’ve never been in therapy before, here’s what to expect.
What to expect in your first session:
- Housekeeping such as paperwork, confidentiality, policies, scheduling, etc. It’s not glamorous, but it’s important to discuss these early in the therapeutic relationship.
- The therapist will start by asking questions to get to know you.
- You may feel uncomfortable or a little overwhelmed. Such personal questions might feel invasive if you aren’t used to discussing these topics. Tell your therapist if you feel uncomfortable–their job is to support you through it.
- If you are meeting your therapist in-person, allow for enough time to get to and find the office.
- If you meet your therapist virtually, allow for enough time to work through potential technological issues.
- Try to keep in mind your goal of working on yourself; be open and curious. You have scheduled this appointment for a reason: you are committed to self-discovery and healing, and the first session is the first step on your journey.
