Do I need grief therapy?
Grief is a normal, healthy response to loss.
We feel hurt, sad, afraid, and lonely when we lose someone because of how much we cared about them. Even though those feelings are painful, they are also important. Everyone experiences grief in their own way – some will feel the pain of grief for a few days, some for a few months, and others will continue to grieve for years.
Sometimes the grieving process is delayed, particularly when we must take care of others who are also grieving. The feelings of loss may not set in for a period of time, only to emerge once our care taking responsibilities have ended.
In some cases, grief can happen around other types of loss. The loss of one’s health, loss of career or educational opportunity, loss of a role (e.g., being a parent), and so forth. We might grieve the life we once had and the future we looked forward to having.
No matter what brought about your grief, and no matter how long you’ve been struggling with the loss, therapy can help – especially if the grief process has become unhealthy or dysfunctional. Some common indicators of potentially unhealthy grief might include:
If you or a loved one are struggling with grief, or if the grief has become unhealthy, let us help.
You deserve support through your grieving process. You deserve a chance at moving forward, feeling well, and having a life worth living again. Contact us today to get started.
How can therapy for grief help?
Grief can make life feel like it’s falling apart. Therapy for grief is specifically designed to help you feel supported, pick up the pieces, and achieve wellness again.
First, therapy is your safe haven for emotional support. Whether you are anticipating a loss, experiencing a new loss, or continuing to grieve losses from the past, we are here for you. Therapy can help you carry difficult feelings of sadness, anger, and regret.
Second, therapy provides a confidential, judgment-free space to work through the loss. You can work through the grief at your own pace, without feeling like you are burdening others. Therapy for grief offers an intentional space to share what’s on your mind, feel your feelings, and notice new things about yourself.
And third, therapy offers a chance to learn strategies for coping and grieving well. Grief often makes us forget to take care of ourselves, especially when we need to take care of others who are grieving. Starting therapy is a great first step towards self-care, and your therapist can help you continue to build on that progress.
As you and your therapist work together, the grief will be easier to bear, and the pain will begin to heal. You can even learn to reintegrate lost loved ones into your life, all with the support of one of our grief experts. No one should have to deal with grief and loss alone – we are here for you.
